A man having an apparent mental lapse died en route to the hospital Wednesday after law enforcement officers detained him.
The man, identified as Joseph Perez, 41, of Fresno, was running and yelling in Palm Avenue near Santa Fe Way about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Fresno police initially found Perez. Sheriff’s deputies, who patrol the area, arrived shortly afterward to detain him.
Because of his mental state, officers believed he may have been under the influence of drugs and an ambulance was called.

As he was on his way to the hospital, Perez died.
The sheriff’s office is investigating Perez’s death.
