A suspected gang member was arrested Friday after Fresno police say he chased his girlfriend’s car for several miles, ramming the Pontiac with his Jeep several times before both cars crashed into an SUV and he dragged her away from the wreck.
The incident was reported to police about 10:20 a.m., when callers said the Jeep was ramming a Pontiac near First Street and Olive Avenue.
At least one driver followed the rolling havoc up First Street to Ashlan Avenue, where the woman attempted to elude the man by driving the wrong way on Ashlan. The man followed and collided with the Pontiac and the SUV.
Lt. Joe Gomez said the man then carried the woman away from the crash scene and told a citizen on Austin Way to watch her while he attempted to elude police. Instead, the citizen called police.
The suspect was arrested on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of kidnapping. Gomez said police believe the suspect, who has a bulldog tattooed on his face, is a gang member.
Two good Samaritans attempted to protect the woman from the man shortly after the woman jumped from the Pontiac.
“You just hit a baby! A baby!” one of the men shouted at the suspect after he was in the back of a police car. The man later explained that there were two children in the woman’s car during the chase.
