A 40-year-old Fresno man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in prison for fatally shooting his daughter’s boyfriend a year ago.
Israel Thomas Garcia’s punishment resulted from a plea agreement he made in Fresno County Superior Court last month when he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
As part of the agreement, Garcia waived his right to appeal his prison sentence, prosecutor William Lacy said.
A criminal complaint accused Garcia of killing 28-year-old Lathan Ma, the father of four children, on June 17, 2015, inside his home at an apartment complex on McKinley Avenue near Millbrook Avenue in central Fresno.
Police said the victim, who was known as Nate Ma, was shot several times in the kitchen after answering a knock on a door to his apartment. Ten shell casings from a 40-caliber firearm were found.
