Fresno police seized two firearms Sunday evening in the wake of gang violence that left two people wounded and one dead in southwest Fresno.
A stolen Glock .40 caliber handgun was recovered just before 6:30 p.m. after officers arrested two alleged gang members following a pursuit that began when officers tried to stop a car near East Belgravia and South Clara avenues. Sgt. Robert Gonzales said passenger Cinque Merriweather, 23, tossed the weapon into a back yard. He and driver Jermaine Edwards, 24, were arrested without incident. Merriweather was sought on felony warrants for a probation violation and domestic violence.
Just before midnight, officers sped to the 800 block of West Hawes Avenue in response to a disturbance at the Cooley Plaza Apartment complex where shots were reportedly fired. Alex Oliver, a reputed gang member, reportedly discarded a Springfield 1911 .45 caliber handgun before running from police. He was found hiding in a storage room and arrested. He was booked on weapons charges.
