Two west Fresno gang members were booked into the Fresno County Jail on Thursday following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash in east-central Fresno.
Around 10:40 p.m two police officers were on routine patrol in the area of Belmont and Orchard avenues in southeast Fresno when they were nearly struck by a reckless driver, Sgt. Troy Miller said.
When officers attemped to stop the white 1997 Chevy Camaro, the driver, Michael E. Joyce, 19, of Fresno, kept driving, Miller said.
Joyce drove the vehicle on Olive Avenue at speeds of up to 80 mph so the officers discontinued the pursuit, citing public safety concerns, but called for helicopter patrol officers to assist in the search.

Eventually the suspects crashed at Maple and Olive avenues in east-central Fresno. Miller said the passenger, Arturo M. Alcocer, 19, fled after the crash and threw a loaded Beretta .40-caliber gun over a chain-link fence, which officers later determined had been stolen from a Fresno resident earlier in the year.
Miller said both suspects have a long criminal history. They were arrested on weapons-related offenses.
