Law enforcement officers in Madera and Fresno counties arrested 56 people on charges of driving under the influence from midnight Dec. 16 through midnight Dec. 22, according to provisional numbers provided by the Avoid the 21 campaign.
There were 81 DUI arrests over the same period last year. Not all of the participating agencies had reported arrests for this year.
The Avoid the 21 campaign represents officers from 21 law-enforcement agencies in the two-county region and is part of a statewide campaign.
According to a campaign announcement, during the Christmas holiday weekend a DUI checkpoint will be conducted in the city of Fresno and extra local DUI patrols will be run in the cities of Clovis, Madera, Selma, Sanger, Kerman and throughout the rural communities.
Also, the California Highway Patrol maximum enforcement period begins at midnight tonight with all available officers deployed on the freeways and county roads they patrol.
All of the beefed-up patrols will continue through Jan. 1.
