Third-ranked Edison High and No. 5 Central rallied from large deficits to avoid upsets Thursday night.
At Sunnyside Stadium, Bobby Peele caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Khari McGee in traffic with 4 seconds left to rally the Tigers to a 35-34 County/Metro Athletic Conference win over Madera in a game Edison trailed 21-0 in the first half.
And, at Buchanan's Veterans Memorial Stadium, Michael Baker passed for 440 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 80 yards to lift the Grizzlies to a 44-28 Tri-River Athletic Conference victory over Clovis West in a game Central trailed 28-14 early in the second half.
McGee had an intercepted pass returned 90 yards for a touchdown by Javier Contreras with 54 seconds to go before marching the Tigers downfield – a drive featuring a 60-yard pass to Terell Green – to deny Madera (4-5) its first CMAC win in four games.
Edison (8-1, 4-0) – overcoming five turnovers, including two onside kicks – clinched at least a tie for the league title.
The Tigers close the regular season at No. 10 Memorial (7-1, 2-1) next Friday. The Panthers play No. 4 Bullard (6-2, 2-1) tonight at McLane Stadium.
Central (7-2, 3-1) still has a shot at a TRAC title tie with No. 1 Clovis (8-0, 3-0), which will play No. 7 Clovis North (5-2, 2-1) tonight at Buchanan.
Central will finish league play next Friday at home against Clovis East (1-7, 0-3).
