Fresno golfer Michael Weaver shot a two-day total of 1-over 143 at the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship and will learn Wednesday whether he qualified for the match-play portion of the tournament.
Play was suspended because of darkness Tuesday, with more than half the field still out on the courses. The top 64 golfers after the second round advance to match play.
Weaver (Clovis West High/Cal), after an opening-round 68, had three double bogies and finished with a 75 on Tuesday at the Erin Hills course.
Atwater's Teddy Schrier was at 145 after shooting 73 at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club.
Clovis East's Bryson DeChambeau carded a first-round 73 and didn't finish his round Tuesday.
Fresno State's Bhavik Patel, who shot 76 Monday, also had his round cut short by darkness.
Fresno boxer captures title
Loren Myers of Fresno won a split decision over local boxer Brian Chiary to capture the National Boxing Association's super middleweight championship in Tampa, Fla.
Myers improved to 8-12-1 after earning 77-75 scores from two judges in the eight-round bout. It was the last professional fight for Tampa native Chiary (10-9), who was awarded the fight 78-74 by the third judge.
Sunbirds men fall to soccer alumni
Augie Gonzalez and Orlando Ramirez scored second-half goals to lift the Fresno Pacific soccer alumni to a 4-3 exhibition victory over the current Sunbirds men's team at Ramirez Field.
Fresno Pacific junior Paul Islas scored twice, and Eddie Cabral added the third goal. The alumni took the early lead on goals by Mihailo Jovanovic and Devon Grousis.
The Sunbirds open the season Friday with a 7 p.m. match at San Jose State.
Williams scores for Pepperdine
Pepperdine freshman striker Lynn Williams, a former Bullard High star and The Bee's 2011 Girls Soccer Player of the Year, scored her first college goal in a 2-0 victory over Arizona.
Williams scored on a hard shot outside the box in the 53rd minute for the Waves (2-0). They opened with a 2-1 victory against Cal and will play at Fresno State at 1 p.m. Sept. 25.
Fresno City plans hoops clinic
The Fresno City College women's basketball team will have a free clinic Sept. 17 with guest speakers Adrian Wiggins, Jerry Wainwright and Russ Davis.
Wiggins has led Fresno State's women to four straight NCAA Tournaments. Wainwright, a former Richmond head coach, is on Fresno State men's coach Rodney Terry's staff. Davis guided Vanguard's women to the 2008 NAIA title and is a three-time Coach of the Year.
The clinic will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fresno City's new gymnasium.
Mexican star to be at soccer clinic
Mexican soccer icon Ramon Ramirez will be on hand for a free youth clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Rotary West Park in Fresno.
Ramirez, a midfielder, was on the Mexican national team and played for Chivas USA in Major League Soccer.
Tom Mulroy, a former member of the U.S. Youth National Team, is running the clinic. Afterward, Ramirez will hold an autograph and photo session.
