Michael Weaver of Fresno played steady golf, but it wasn't enough to dethrone defending champion John Catlin in Friday's final of the 108th NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill.
Catlin took the lead on the fourth hole and built his advantage for a 5-and-3 victory in the 36-hole final.
Weaver, representing Fort Washington Golf and Country Club, shot 4 under when the match was stopped after the 33rd hole. Catlin of North Ridge CC was at 9 under.
Weaver, a former Clovis West star, next will head to the USGA Amateur Championship on Monday through Aug. 28 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis., near Milwaukee. He qualified by winning a sectional at Sunnyside Country Club earlier in the month.
Also in the field will be Clovis East senior Bryson DeChambeau and Derek Ernst, a UNLV senior and Clovis East graduate.
Weaver plays his first round at Erin Hills, while DeChambeau and Ernst will start at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa.
No. 1 Sunbirds stumble in volleyball match on road
NAIA preseason No. 1 Fresno Pacific started its volleyball season on a sour note, falling on the road at No. 14 Southern Oregon 3-1.
Jessie Alcorn had 17 kills and Kathleen Anderson added 15, but the Sunbirds got off to a slow start and couldn't recover in a 22-25, 21-25, 25-16, 19-25 setback in Kelly Winter's coaching debut.
