Defender Nathan Smith, a native of Clovis and former Cal Odyssey player, scored a goal from about 35 yards out in overtime Sunday night, sparking the U.S. soccer team to the title at the Under-17 CONCACAF Championships.
The U.S. went on to win 3-0 against Canada in the title game in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The teams were tied 0-0 after regulation before Smith put the U.S. ahead in the first of two overtime periods, in the 92nd minute.
The regional title is the USA's third overall, having won the tournament in 1992 and also in 1983 when it was a U-16 championship.
Never miss a local story.
The U.S. is one of 14 teams to have qualified for this summer's FIFA U-17 World Cup, a 24-team tournament that will take place June 18-July 10 in seven cities in Mexico.
