Buchanan High's boys and Bullard's girls -- each without a loss to Central Section opposition this season -- were given No. 1 seeds Saturday for the Division I soccer playoffs and drew first-round byes.
Other No. 1 boys seeds included Golden Valley (D-II), Dinuba (D-III), Mira Monte (D-IV), Riverdale (D-V) and Mendota (D-VI). Frontier (D-II), Highland (D-III), Central Valley Christian (D-IV), Sierra (D-V) and Riverdale (D-VI) drew top seeds among the girls. The playoffs begin Tuesday for the girls and Wednesday for the boys.
Buchanan enters the playoffs as the No. 1 boys seed in D-I for the second straight season. Last year, the Bears were upset in the semifinals 5-3 on penalty kicks after tying 0-0 through overtime against Centennial. Buchanan (18-2-2) is riding a 13-game unbeaten streak, which includes a 10-0 run through the Tri-River Athletic Conference.
Bullard's girls earned the top seed over five-time defending D-I champion Buchanan. The County/Metro Athletic Conference champion Knights (20-3-1) and TRAC titlist Bears (14-2-3) played to an official 0-0 tie during a Peggy Renberg Tournament game Dec. 11 that the Bears would eventually win on penalty kicks for the purpose of tournament standings.
On the boys side, defending D-II champion Redwood drew a No. 2 seed behind Golden Valley, Dinuba is the favorite to repeat in D-III, Bakersfield's Mira Monte makes its first playoff appearance as the No. 1 seed in D-IV, where last year's winner Shafter is a five seed, defending D-V champ Mission Prep is no longer in the section and reigning D-VI winner Farmersville was seeded fifth.
Last season's D-II girls champ Garces is a three seed behind promoted reigning D-III winner Clovis North, Central Valley Christian is favored to repeat in D-IV ahead of second-seeded and promoted 2010 D-V champion Liberty-Madera Ranchos, while defending D-VI titlist Strathmore was promoted to D-V, where it is a No. 3 seed.
