A horrific four-day period for Kern County high school athletics began Thursday, when Stockdale's Alex Collatz -- the state's defending champion in the girls' discus -- tore her left anterior cruciate ligament in a volleyball match against Clovis West.
The senior standout frontline player injured her left knee in the second game of a 3-1, home-court loss to Central Section's defending Division I titlist.
Alan Collatz, the athlete's father and track and field coach at Cal State Bakersfield, didn't dismiss the possibility of her returning to the ring late in the spring.
"There's no timetable," he told The Bakersfield Californian. "But [track and field] is not out as long as the surgery's successful and she does not re-injure it."
Never miss a local story.
Alex Collatz's season-best 180-9 in the discus last spring was best nationally by nearly a foot. The two-time USA Today All-American also placed fifth in the state shot put.
