The Central Cal Boys’ Volleyball Club, which is comprised of many players from the Clovis Unified School District, recently earned a bid to the 2015 Boys’ Junior National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, thanks to a second-place finish at the NoDinx/NCVA 2015 Boys Bid Tournament in San Mateo in early January.
The Central Cal Under-14 boys team, which will be the only group representing California’s Central Valley at the Junior National Championships June 29 to July 3, is led by coach Vang (Butch) Moua. The team includes Timmy Keoboupha, Raven Moua, Christopher Liu, David Hawkins, Lang Thao, Darren Vue, David Zakharyan, Peyton Carey, Kurt Hildebrandt, and Bryan Livesay. Many of the players attend Clovis Unified schools such as Granite Ridge, Clark, Kastner and Reyburn.
The team has enjoyed phenomenal success both on and off the court due in large part to the leadership provided by Coach Moua, who is an Advanced Math teacher at Reyburn Intermediate.
“Coach Moua spends quality time getting to know his athletes on and off the court,” said Bob McCarthy, President of the Central Cal Volleyball Club. “The most talked about quality that makes our team stand out is our coach. He doesn’t just talk about the skills he wants athletes to perform; he spends the time on the court to help model those skills.”
All of the dedicated members have been involved in the club for several years and maintained their commitment to excellence. The Central Cal Boys’ Volleyball Club believes in practicing the philosophy of improving the mind, body, and spirit, and every day the boys challenge themselves in all of these areas to be all-around scholar athletes.
The team is currently asking local businesses and individuals to help sponsor their trip to the 2015 Boys’ Junior National Championships, where they’ll be representing the Central Valley. The team recently began their fundraising efforts by receiving a Molten Diversity Grant from USA Volleyball. Companies and/or individuals interested in supporting the team with a tax-deductible donation can email Doug Carey at email@example.com or call (559) 840-7039.
