Add frozen yogurt to the list of foods you can now get from a truck. Clovis resident Dennis Cantrell debuted his Gorilla Gurt mobile frozen yogurt shop this month at Big Hat Days.
The pink and white truck is just like a frozen yogurt shop — it can serve eight flavors from four self-serve dispensers and has a toppings bar — except that it's on the side of a truck. Customers serve themselves and pay by the ounce.
Cantrell will be taking his truck to events including school carnivals and fundraisers, and he hopes to be at local fairs.
He decided to buy the truck after being laid off from his job serving subpoenas and record keeping for a local attorney. A generous severance package allowed him to buy the truck and the business name from its Florida owner.
"Nobody I talk to anywhere has even seen a frozen yogurt mobile truck," he said.
Being the only one around is important because many events only allow one food vendor of each category.
The truck gets lots of attention: "I'm driving down the road and people are pointing at us," Cantrell said. "It's the gorilla itself. Kids love the gorilla."
