A vegetation fire sparked by a car burned 49 acres north of Clovis on Saturday evening, Cal Fire/Fresno County Fire spokesman Ryan Michaels said.
Just before 6 p.m., firefighters arrived at a grass fire call at DeWolf and Behymer avenues and found a car on fire in a field, Michaels said. The wind caused the fire to jump across Behymer and spread to 49 acres before it was contained by 40 firefighters from multiple departments, who used bulldozers and aircraft to battle the blaze.
Michaels said the man who drove the car was cooperating with investigators from Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol to determine what happened.
He added that drivers should avoid driving over dry grass, which can ignite from the heat of an exhaust system.
