A man died after being hit by a car while he was walking his dog in Clovis on Monday night, police said.
The man, identified this morning by the Fresno County coroner as Dennis Costella, 63, of Clovis, was walking his dog near Fowler and Shepherd avenues around 8 p.m., Clovis police spokeswoman Janet Stoll-Lee said. Costello and his dog entered a crosswalk that has embedded lights.
Stoll-Lee said the driver did not see the man or the crosswalk lights and crashed into him. The driver stopped after the collision and has not been charged. Stoll-Lee said an investigation could last several weeks.
The dog, a 140-pound Labrador named Bear, was taken to an emergency pet hospital and treated for cuts. The dog is back with its family, Stoll-Lee said.
Note: An earlier version of this story stated that the embedded lights were not working. Luke Serpa, Clovis assistant public utilities director, said this morning that city workers saw the lights working Monday afternoon and that they are working correctly this morning. Also, an earlier version of this story misspelled the victim's last name.
