DeYoung Properties is returning to the television spotlight and you can be a part of the program. The local company will be featured on the new HGTV series "Showhouse Showdown," which will debut later this summer.
DeYoung had previous TV exposure. In 2009 it was behind the local build for the ABC series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Producers of that show were so impressed with Fresno, the company and the community they thought of DeYoung for the new series.
"Showhouse Showdown" is a competition between two professional interior designers who take over two newly built and identical homes or townhomes with identical budgets to create a winning interior design. At the end of each episode one designer is voted the winner by members of the public who represent the developer's target market.
Designers will combine custom ideas with features and amenities from the DeYoung Design Center and furnishings from Mor Furniture to create an interior that represents their unique design style. Their work will be at DeYoung's Ashley Pointe Community in Clovis.
Never miss a local story.
"They recommended us and we got the lucky phone call to be one of 12 companies featured in the show," says Ryan DeYoung, vice president of DeYoung Properties. "The main reason we said we wanted to be a part of the show was because this is great for Fresno. It will show us in a great light.
"In terms of our company, it's a great opportunity to get the community involved and show the diversity of our homes. One home could look completely different than another."
Here's how you can be a part of the process: The winning designer will be determined through an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. July 31 at 2109 Buckingham Ave. and 2117 Buckingham Ave. in Clovis.
The first 300 people will be allowed to tour the completed homes, and the first 100 people will vote on which designer's rooms they prefer and which home they would buy.
And, if anyone really wants to buy the homes, they will be made available either as they are decorated or in the original stripped down versions.
Some locals will be asked to give their opinions on camera, so all participants must be willing to sign a release form to appear in the cable program.
Producers encourage people of all ages to attend the free event. A consenting adult must accompany children younger than 18. Interested participants should arrive at the site before 9 a.m.
DeYoung Properties is giving away four reserved spaces for the open house. Go to a DeYoung Model Home Center or enter on DeYoung Properties' Facebook page before July 24. Contest details and rules are at www.deyoungproperties.com.
"We're very excited to be bringing this fun, new series to the Fresno area," says Dawn Stroupe, the show's executive producer. "DeYoung Properties and the selected designers have been working very hard and we can't wait for the people of Fresno to see the results and be a part of 'Showhouse Showdown.' "

Former KFSN (Channel 30.1) anchor Juanita Stevenson is the host of the new KVPR (FM 89.3) program "Valley Edition." The weekly show, which launched 9 a.m. Tuesday, will focus on health care, government, education and the environment through a mix of reporting, roundtable discussions and listener calls.
"Valley Edition" replaces "Quality of Life," the program started on the local radio station by Terry Phillips in 2005. Phillips was fired in February.
"We think Juanita is an outstanding addition to our team," says Joe Moore, director of program content. "She is one of the Valley's most respected journalists and brings with her a deep knowledge of the San Joaquin Valley, the people and the issues."
Stevenson has lived and worked in Fresno for the past 24 years.
