Sixteen high school juniors are being honored tonight by Clovis Unified School officials for overcoming personal obstacles to reach their educational goals.
Those honored by the Students of Promise program -- selected by a panel of directors with the Foundation for Clovis Schools and Clovis Unified educators -- will receive $1,500 scholarships to be used for their educations after high school.
The students have faced personal challenges including the loss of family members, debilitating illnesses or gang involvement.
This year's recipients are Michelle Alarcon, Clovis High School; Dylan Hall and Christopher Stroud, Gateway High School; John Brinson, Tom Lee, Joanna Thao, Vilaiphone Vang and Jeremiah Musto, Clovis East High School; Candice Ooley and Morgan Pollock, Buchanan High School; Carly Pizarro, Conor Tompkins, Crystal Silva and Yi-Shiuan Tung, Clovis West High School; Michael Porter and Jordan Rutledge, Clovis North High School.
Tonight's banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. at TorNino's Banquet Hall at Blackstone and Shaw avenues.
