The National Park Service marks its 100th anniversary on Thursday. To commemorate the day, a number of events are planned at national parks and into the weekend. Admission will be free through Sunday.
9:30 a.m.: Ranger talk – “Why Yosemite Collects,” 1.5 hours. Meet at front of Yosemite Museum, near shuttle stop 5/9.

1 p.m.: Ranger talk - “100 years of the NPS Uniform,” 15 minutes. Yosemite Valley Indian Cultural museum, near shuttle stop 5/9.
8 p.m.: Ranger program - “Stephen T. Mather and the Founding of the National Park Service,” 1 hour. Lower Pines Campground Amphitheater, near shuttle stop 19.
Friday and Saturday
8:30 p.m.: Special centennial evening program, 1 hour. Half Dome Village Amphitheater.
CRANE FLAT / HETCH HETCHY
5 p.m.: Hetch Hetchy – “Where it all began!” 1 hour. Celebrating 100 Years of the National Park Service. O’Shaughnessy Dam.
8 p.m.: Campfire Program, “Stephen T. Mather and the National Park Service,” 1 hour. Crane Flat Amphitheater.
10 a.m.: Centennial celebration hike to the top of Lembert Dome, 3 hours. Moderately strenuous 3 miles. Dog Lake parking, shuttle stop 2. Bring snacks and water.
2 p.m.: Junior Ranger walk, 2 hours. Ages 7-12. Pothole Dome shuttle stop 8.
8 p.m.: Campfire – “Celebrating the National Park Service Centennial: A Musical Journey through Mountain Time,” 1 hour. Dana Circle in Tuolumne Meadows Campground.
7:45 p.m.: Sunset centennial celebration talk, 30 minutes. Glacier Point Railing, overlooking the Valley.
9 a.m.: Tour of Pioneer Yosemite History Center, 1 hour. Learn how Yosemite’s pioneers were instrumental in the birth and development of the national park idea. Meet at Wawona Covered Bridge in Pioneer Yosemite History Center.
10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m.: Junior ranger talk, 15 minutes. Learn what park rangers do. Front of Wawona Visitor Center at Hill’s Studio.
10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Horse-Drawn Stage Rides, 10 minutes. Free rides in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Obtain pass from stage office in Pioneer Yosemite History Center.
11 a.m.: Tour of Pioneer Yosemite History Center, 1 hour.
Noon: Junior ranger talk, 15 minutes. Front of Wawona Visitor Center at Hill’s Studio.
1 p.m.: Tour of Pioneer Yosemite History Center, 1 hour.
SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS
Ranger-led programs (various times TBD) – The public is welcome to learn more about the parks at ranger-led programs during this day.
10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Cave tours. Special discovery tour 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Cave tours will be done by candlelight. Reserve your spot at www.recreation.gov.
The history of the Park Service’s Uniforms – The Sequoia Parks Conservancy office in Three Rivers will host an open house highlighting the history of National Park Service uniforms. This will include a design contest by local students under the theme, “What will national park uniforms look like 100 years from now?”
