A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was struck by a truck while crossing Willow Avenue with family members Wednesday night in Clovis. A 2-year-old boy in a stroller was also struck in the crash, but sustained less serious injuries.
Clovis police said the collision took place just before 10 p.m. at Willow and Holland avenues as the truck was northbound on Willow and that the driver was not believed to be under the influence. The incident is under investigation by police.
The injured girl was identified by family members as Destiny Molijar of San Diego, and said she is being treated at Community Regional Medical Center. The other child is Kaiden Lopez of Fresno, who was treated at the hospital and released.
Jose Lopez, who was with other family members when the collision took place, said the driver was speeding and tried to flee the scene. Jose Lopez is the son of Bee reporter Pablo Lopez. Police did not comment on Jose Lopez’s allegations.
Jose Lopez said he was walking with his wife and other family members when the collision took place. He said the family was crossing Willow at Holland from the southwest corner to the northeast corner when the truck approached them at a speed he estimated to be between 50 and 60 mph. Jose Lopez said that the truck struck Destiny and the stroller. Jose Lopez said that after the collision, family members jumped in front of the truck to prevent the driver from leaving the scene. Jose Lopez said he then grabbed the driver and pushed him to the ground before police arrived.
