A wildfire in the foothills east of Clovis prompted evacuations Monday afternoon as flames threatened two dozen homes, outhouses and barns in the rural area around Watts Valley Road and Big Springs Lane, according to Fresno County Cal Fire.
The Big Fire started around 2:30 p.m. Monday and burned up to 188 acres before the forward progress of the fire was stopped at a fire retardant line, said Stacy Nolan, a Cal Fire fire prevention specialist. The blaze is 20 percent contained and already burned a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. The deputy, who was helping with evacuations, was not injured.
Twenty engines, six hand crews, four water tankers and four bulldozers are battling the fire, Nolan said. A VLAT, very large, air tanker was also called.
