A 19-year-old pedestrian who was reportedly trying to fetch water for car crash victims was struck and critically injured by a Buick Tuesday afternoon as she crossed Shaw Avenue in northwest Fresno, police said.
The woman had just stepped off a bus on the south side of Shaw Avenue near Feland Avenue about 3 p.m., shortly after a Toyota pickup and a Nissan Altima collided, leaving both vehicles with major damage. Witnesses said the woman offered to fetch water from her job when she crossed Shaw and walked into the path of a westbound Buick Enclave that had a green light. The woman was knocked into the air and landed on the asphalt, suffering a head injury, broken bones and road rash, Lt. Joe Gomez said.
The woman had significant head trauma and was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, where she was taken to intensive care and surgery, Gomez said.
The driver of the Buick remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. The victims of the earlier crash suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Community Regional for treatment.
