An off-duty Fresno police officer and several bystanders saved a man from a burning building in central Fresno on Saturday afternoon, said Fresno Fire Department Battalion Chief Don Pier.
Pier said the fire started around 3 p.m. inside the closed-down business at 479 E. Belmont Ave. between Roosevelt and Palm avenues.
The officer and bystanders saw a boarded-up window moving and realized someone might be inside. They managed to pull the man to safety, and he was unharmed.
Several transformers were damaged during the fire and a Pacific Gas & Electric crew was called out to fix the power pole in the alley beside the business. Damage was estimated at about $20,000, not including the transformers and power pole.
