A 74-year-old man died when his car crashed into the Delta-Mendota Canal near Firebaugh shortly after noon Monday.
The incident occurred about 12:14 p.m. at North Washoe and West Bullard avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol, when for an unknown reason the man’s Acura TL swerved off the road, first hitting a pole and then crashing into the canal. By the time CHP officers arrived shortly after, the vehicle was fully submerged.
A dive team was assembled to rescue the man, but he was later pronounced dead on scene.
