A fire that started in a vacant commercial building on Calaveras and B streets in southwest Fresno Monday night is believed to have been started by someone who broke into the building, fire Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo said.
Firefighters were called around 7 p.m. by neighbors who were concerned someone was inside the building. Arriving fire crews found heavy smoke billowing out of the windows, but firefighters who searched the building found no one inside.
An investigator found evidence that someone had entered the structure in an area where the fire started. The old building is believed to have been vacant for about 10 years.
The fire was contained to a quarter of the building, Escobedo said.
At least 36 firefighters were dispatched to the fire.
