Large plumes of smoke billowed from an engulfed two-story home east of Clovis as Fresno County firefighters battled the flames Thursday night.
Around 8 p.m., firefighters received a report of a structure fire in the 4000 block of Malvern Avenue, near Shaw and Academy avenues, battalion Chief Chris King said.
“The structure is going to be a total loss,” King said. “It’ll be a long night.”
Firefighters confirmed with the property owners that no one was inside, King said.
King assumed control of the incident and requested a second alarm, which brought a total of “nine engine companies, four water tenders and three chief officers,” he said. Roughly 35 fire personnel were on scene, he said.
Another structure on the property unattached to the home was undamaged, and firefighters prevented the flames from spreading, King said.
Initial reports that there may have been marijuana growing near the property were not confirmed, King said.
There was no indication yet of what caused the fire, King said, but two California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection investigators were on scene to begin investigating the cause.
