A 6-year-old boy was struck by a Coalinga police car on New Year’s Eve as officers were pursuing a suspect.
The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. as officers were chasing a suspect wanted on outstanding warrants, said Police Chief Michael Salvador.
Salvador said an officer was giving chase in his patrol car with the emergency lights on near Polk Street and Elm Avenue when he saw a group of pedestrians crossing the street in front of him.
The officer braked and swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrians, but he ended up hitting a boy who was running across the road, Salvador said.
He stopped and rendered first aid to the boy until paramedics arrived. The child was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. An internal investigation also will be conducted to determine if any policy violations occurred during the incident.
