A Fresno man was arrested on New Year’s Eve for suspicion of shooting a rifle toward the skies above central Fresno, police said.
Officers were investigating reports of shots fired in the area of White Avenue and Diana Street, just east of Belmont Avenue and Abby Street, about 11 p.m. when they heard several shots being fired near their location, Sgt. Chris Desmond said.
Officers heard more shots and narrowed the location to a corner house on Thomas Avenue and Thesta Street. They walked toward the house and saw a man bolt into the backyard of the house through a nearby alley, Desmond said.
Officers found a spent shell casing from a large caliber rifle in the driveway.
Never miss a local story.
Khamla Phaboriboune, 22, surrendered to officers and allowed them to search the yard and a small detached garage where he was found. Officers found more spent rifle casings, live ammunition and a SKS rifle with several magazines, Desmond said.
Police arrested Phaboriboune and seized his rifle. He was booked into Fresno County Jail for reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of an assault rifle. He was released early New Year’s Day on bond, according to jail records.
