Two families are without homes Wednesday night after a small fire in a northwest Fresno apartment unit’s bedroom spread to a connecting attic, firefighters said.
Fresno fire spokesman Pete Martinez said firefighter were checking two other units for damage and hazards. It’s possible that the residents of those units will also need to leave their homes tonight.
The department received multiple 911 calls at 140 W. San Jose St. for a fire. Firefighters saw flames shooting out of a second story bedroom and searched the unit for anyone caught in the blaze. The residents had already left.
No one was injured, but the residents’ cat was killed. Martinez said everyone who was displaced had somewhere to stay the night.
Never miss a local story.
The cause is still under investigation. This was the fourth fire in Fresno on Wednesday. Martinez cautioned residents to be careful when using portable heaters or fireplaces during this cold weather.
