A two-alarm fire near downtown Fresno blocked Tulare Street early Friday.
The fire was reported about 6:30 a.m. in the 3300 block of Tulare Street, where firefighters found an apartment in flames with heavy smoke erupting from the building, spokesman Pete Martinez said.
A call went out quickly for more firetrucks as the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm blaze. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a nearby building.
Westbound traffic on Tulare Street was routed through neighborhood streets, snarling the morning commute for those who work downtown.
Never miss a local story.
Martinez said first responders saw someone who may have been running away from the vacant building and a fire investigator was called in. Firefighters have responded to a least one fire at the building before.
The cause and the amount of damage is under investigation.
