Nick’s bar, which received a 20-day suspension from the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Friday, was heavily damaged in a fire early Wednesday, the Fresno Fire Department reported.
Don MacAlpine, a fire investigator for the department, said the blaze erupted about 4 a.m. inside the bar at the corner of West and Shields avenues in central Fresno. The cause is under investigation. MacAlpine said it’s believed “other crimes” were taking place about the time that the fire broke out. He said he could not immediately elaborate on the nature of those crimes.
A notice of suspension was posted on the door of the bar. It said the suspension would end on Aug. 27, but it is unclear whether the bar will reopen then because of extensive interior damage.
The bar was the scene of a murder when Brandon Cervantez, 30, was shot in the parking lot about 2 a.m. Sept. 27, 2013 after a disturbance that police said erupted inside. Police said Cervantez was beaten by Daniel Rozadilla and Raziel Cruz, then 25, before he was shot by Kevin Ramirez, then 22. The three were gang members or associates.
