Fresno firefighters quickly contained a two-alarm fire near Kirk Elementary School in southwest Fresno on Tuesday afternoon.
Fresno Fire spokesman Pete Martinez said the house fire at 2326 S. Lily Ave. started around 4 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Martinez said witnesses reported seeing someone on the home's roof about an hour before the fire started. No one was home when firefighters arrived and the number of residents, and total estimated damage to the home, was not yet known.
Martinez said heavy fire and smoke was present when firefighters arrived, who got the blaze under control in about 10 minutes. A total of 24 firefighters responded and by 4:30 p.m., they were pulling off shingles to get at hot spots in the attic space.
Lily Avenue is temporarily closed between Belgravia and Rev. Chester Riggins avenues as firefighters work to fully extinguish the fire.
