A Fresno district Caltrans employee was awarded a Medal of Valor from the state of California on Thursday for rescuing a family from their submerged vehicle in 2012.
James Murrieta was one of 52 state employees to receive the award from Nancy McFadden, Gov. Jerry Brown’s executive secretary. The Medal of Valor is the highest honor that California can give to its public servants.
Murrieta saved the family, who was trapped under water after a traffic accident, on May 1, 2012.
