Fresno police Thursday afternoon took down a wanted fugitive, believed to be one of the city’s top car thieves, before he could officially be named to the department’s “Top Five” list.
Derek Smith, also known as “Pup,” was arrested by the Career Criminal Auto Theft Team at a gasoline station at First Street and Shields Avenue about 3:30 p.m.
Sgt. Tim Tietjen said officers were watching a stolen car when Smith drove off in it. Tietjen said police were about to list Smith at the top of its list when he was taken into custody. He will probably be placed in one of the beds the city reserves in the Fresno County Jail to ensure they are not released, Tietjen said.
Smith is affiliated with the Peckerwood gang and was sought on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
