The California Department of Transportation held a ceremony in central Fresno on Wednesday morning to honor those employees who lost their lives on the job.
The ceremony took place at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Caltrans District Office. Local Caltrans leadership and California Highway Patrol Chief Jim Abrames spoke at the event.
The ceremony included a temporary memorial made up of 183 orange safety cones — one for each worker killed while working since 1921. Most of these deaths were caused by impaired, reckless or inattentive drivers traveling through road work areas.
