Active and reserve sailors from the U.S. Navy will hold a ceremony Thursday in Kern County to honor Cesar Chavez, a Navy veteran, on the 22nd anniversary of his death.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument at 29700 Woodford-Tehachapi Road in Keene, California. Exhibits, presentations and short films on Latino veterans will be on display at the adjacent visitors’ center after the Navy dedication.
The Navy will play “Taps,” hold a rifle salute and give Chavez’s wife, Helen, a folded flag at his gravesite. Chavez served in the Navy just after World War II.
