One man was killed and two women suffered major injuries on Wednesday in a head-on collision that involved three cars in Coarsegold, the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP said that a 73-year-old man was driving south on Highway 41 near Road 406 around 4:30 p.m. when he veered into the northbound lane. Elsie Perez Morin, 63, was driving north and attempted to swerve out of the way. Morin was sideswiped by the man, who then crashed head-on with a third car.
The two women in the third car suffered major injuries. Robin Jeanne Blossom, 64, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center by ambulance, and Beatty Jane Sitton, 68, was airlifted to the same hospital by helicopter.
The man died from his injuries at the scene. His identity was not released until family can be notified.
Morin, the driver of the second car, was not hurt.
Highway 41 was closed for about 90 minutes while the CHP investigated the crash.
