Fresno police on Wednesday discovered a manmade cave in central Fresno that they believe was dug and occupied by homeless people.
Officer Josh Knapp said the department’s homeless task force received a call around 2:30 p.m. of a growing homeless settlement in an alley on the 1200 block of East Vassar Avenue, just north of Fresno City College. Police discovered a cave-like dwelling with an opening that was between six and eight feet high, as well as deep.
Knapp said no homeless people were found inside but that a tarp, blanket and some trash was at the cave’s entrance. He said Fresno city workers were filling the hole with dirt on Wednesday afternoon.
Knapp said he has come across two or three other caves dug by homeless people, but that the one discovered Wednesday was the longest, deepest and most dangerous he’s seen.
The hole “definitely could have caved-in on people,” he said.
