Cal Fire will begin inspecting properties for fire hazards to ensure they are compliant with its hazard abatement and defensible space clearance guidelines.
The department advises properties less than 5 acres have all dry grass and weeds removed. Lots larger than 5 acres should have a 30-foot clearance around property lines.
Residents east of the Friant Kern Canal and west of Interstate 5 should have 100 feet of of defensible space — no flammable grasses, brush or trees.
The target date for compliance is May 1.
