Eight Fresno firefighters were honored Thursday by the Fresno City Council and Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin for their role in the rescue of three children who were left home alone Jan. 25 as a fire erupted in their apartment.
Honored were Clint Walbeck, James Perkins, Brandon Griffith, Christian Palmer, Justin Hill, Josh Sellers, DeAndre Douglas and Jeremy Tatham.
Police said Jamela Vanessa Brown, 19, left her three children, ages 1, 3 and 4, for at least 30 minutes while she walked to a store more than a half mile away. A fire broke out in the apartment in the 800 block of East Church Avenue while she was gone. Arriving firefighters found the children unconscious.
The three, who were taken to Valley Children’s Hospital, are expected to recover. Brown was arrested on felony charges of child cruelty.
