Police took an emotionally disturbed man into custody Monday morning after he reportedly set fire to his estranged girlfriend’s apartment in central Fresno.
Police Lt. Joe Gomez said officers went to the area of Ashlan and Winery avenues about 10 a.m., where the 44-year-old man had confronted the woman in her apartment. The man was uncooperative and belligerant with officers and poured lighter fluid over his head and body and threatened to set himself on fire. He slammed the door on officers and police evacuated nearby apartments. Gomez said the man cut his hands and arms breaking a window after starting a blaze inside. When he opened the front door, he was taken into custody and firefighters put out the blaze, which damaged the interior.
The man is receiving medical treatment and evaluation.
