Visalia police Lt. Ed Lynn will serve as acting chief of the Visalia Police Department after Police Chief Colleen Mestas steps down this week, the city said Wednesday.
Mestas announced last week that she will retire early due to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Her last work day will be Thursday.
Lynn will serve as acting chief until a permanent chief is selected in an internal promotion process, the city said. Lynn has indicated no interest in the position.
An appointment of a new chief is anticipated in March. City Manager Mike Olmos will make the final appointment with confirmation from the Visalia City Council, the city said.
Never miss a local story.
Lynn’s appointment allows candidates for the top job to focus on the internal interview process, the city said.
Lynn began his career with the Visalia Police Department in 1985, has worked in all areas of the department and has previously served as acting chief.
