A southeast Fresno apartment complex caught fire Tuesday afternoon, burning two apartments and displacing 12 people, said Pete Martinez, spokesman for the Fresno Fire Department.
The two-alarm fire at 225 S. Argyle Ave., just northeast of Sunnyside Health & Tennis Club, was reported around 2:30 p.m., with heavy smoke visible from the 72-unit complex when firefighters arrived, Martinez said.
Neighbors tried to put out the blaze with fire extinguishers and by opening a window, but that added fuel to the fire by increasing oxygen in a first-floor apartment, Martinez said. The fire then jumped to a second-story apartment. Two other units received smoke damage.
The fire caused about $100,000 in damages. Martinez said no one was injured and those displaced were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
