An 18-year-old Fresno woman died on Jan. 6 after the car carrying her and two others veered off Highway 41 near Manning Avenue and hit a drainage culvert.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Axel Reyes said the woman, later identified as Yvette Avila by the Fresno County Coroner, was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident and was thrown out of the 2004 Nissan Altima, which rolled several times and came to rest on top of her.
Avila was rushed by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center, where she later died.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, and a second passenger was not hurt in the crash. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Reyes said.
