Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville has banned children under 13 from visiting patients to thwart the spread of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus.
The ban went into effect Monday and will remain in place until further notice, the hospital said. The RSV and flu season can last through winter until early spring.
Children requiring hospitalization are not included in the restrictions.
RSV is a virus causing cold symptoms that can cause potentially life-threatening complications in infants and children with pre-existing medical conditions.
Influenza, or the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness. Healthy adults can infect others one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick.
