Kingsburg police confirmed that a body was discovered in the downtown area along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
The body was found near the intersection of Draper and Simpson avenues. When police arrived, they found an unidentified man dead beside the tracks.
Police theorize that he was possibly struck by a train, but the time of the incident is unclear. The investigation is continuing.
Fresno County homicide detectives are investigating the death.
“We originally thought it was a person struck by a train because they were lying next to the tracks,” said Tony Botti, sheriff’s spokesman. “Our deputy coroner got out there and noticed some injuries that were questionable in her mind.”
As a precaution, homicide detectives were sent to Kingsburg and they are talking with railroad company officials to see if they are aware if one of their trains struck someone, Botti said.
