A woman who appeared to be traveling with friends or family on the start of Memorial Day weekend died Friday morning when the rental car she was riding in slammed into a highway embankment in downtown Fresno.
The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 at Fresno Street.
Victor Taylor of the California Highway Patrol said the car was moving about 55 mph when it veered left, swerved right and slammed into the Fresno Street overpass bridge.
The woman died at the scene. The female driver sustained major injuries and a child in the back sustained less serious injuries.
Taylor said the rented car was from a location south of Fresno.
Traffic was backed up after the crash for about an hour.
