A fire erupted in a vacant central Fresno apartment Sunday morning and it wasn’t the first time firefighters had been called out to the building, said Capt. Mike Gilbert with the Fresno Fire Department.
The fire began around 8:30 a.m. inside the building in an alley near Belmont and Thomas avenues. Firefighters arrived to find flames showing from a window on the first story of the apartment
No one was found inside and there were no witnesses to the fire, said Gilbert. No belongings were found inside, and the damage was contained to the first floor. The fire was dangerous because two previous fires in the same building had already caused structural damage and there was a danger of the apartment collapsing with crews inside, Gilbert said.
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated. The walls will be boarded up once more, Gilbert said, in an effort to keep anyone from breaking in.
