Fast-moving plumes of smoke covered Interstate 5 Friday as a massive fire tore through dry grass south of Los Banos. The fire was contained Saturday.
Cal Fire reported the Wright Fire started around 5:30 p.m. on the west side of Interstate 5 near Arburua Road in Merced County.
By 7 a.m. Saturday, Cal Fire listed the Wright Fire as fully contained, burning through 1,800 acres.

As the thick smoke spread Friday, drivers took to social media to broadcast images of the scene. Will Ayala posted a video on Instagram showing flames spreading on the dry grass as smoke billows. Fire can be seen in the median.
Heavy northbound traffic was slow-moving but southbound traffic appears light.
