A Riverdale motorcyclist who was killed Monday at Highway 41 after he was rear-ended by a truck was identified by the Fresno County Coroner as Eric Leoni, 48.
The CHP reported that narcotics may have played a role in the fatality and named the big rig driver as Nicholas Laurent Appert, 20, of San Francisco.
The crash took place at 5:14 a.m. The CHP said Leoni was stopped for a red light on eastbound Mt. Whitney at Highway 41 when his Harley-Davidson was struck from behind by Appert, who was driving a Freightliner. Appert reportedly failed to slow for the traffic signal. The truck came to rest with the motorcycle underneath. Leoni died at the scene. Appert was not injured.
The CHP said that Appert was arrested but did not further elaborate on the reported role of narcotics in the crash.
Highway 41 was closed until about 8 a.m. as part of the investigation.
